Ghosts in the Desolation

During my stay in the Desolation, I encountered a few ghosts looking for help. Some might think that helping them is pretty useless, since they are no longer living. However I see it as a good opportunity to help them “move on”.

In the Shattered Ravines near the transition to Joko’s Domain, Primeval King Jahnus wanted me to kill his ungrateful slaves. Apparently his slaves refused to be buried alive along with him. I refused his request and killed the king and his royal guards instead.

The Ruptured Heart

Now that I’m at the final unexplored area of the Desolation, I’m starting to dread what lies ahead. Even as Rajas and I entered the Ruptured Heart, the sight of the Mouth of Torment makes me feel ill. When we fought Varesh, Abaddon’s mask, hand and broken sword were visible. Nearing her defeat, everything was sucked into a portal, which crashed down leaving a huge hole in the Mouth of Torment. I bring this up because in the Ruptured Heart, you can still see the god of secret’s mask, hand and broken sword. Rajas thought this may just be an illusion.

Poisoned Outcrops

Before Rajas and I headed out into the Poisoned Outcrops, we spoke with Vissh Rakissh; one of the last of his kind in the Lair of the Forgotten outpost. Earlier that day I took his request to help retrieve the Staff of the Mists: a powerful and ancient relic of the past and “twin” to the Scepter of Orr. What the Undead Lich did with the Scepter of Orr is still fresh in my mind, so I couldn’t stand by and let the margonites run loose with its twin.

The Shattered Ravines

Exploring the Desolation can certainly drain one’s endurance. So it pleases me that Rajas is coming along to keep me company while I search the Shattered Ravines. As we left the nearby outpost, large tendrils, a reminder of Abaddon’s corruption, caught our attention. I can see why so many adventurers dislike straying from the beaten path. Even the strongest of warriors succumb to his taint, remaining in a state of madness.
Rajas and I have personal items that we keep to reinforce our will to bring him down. Rajas has a miniature grey giant that a child dropped while evacuating from Vabbi. It reminds him of all the innocent lives that we, as adventurers, are committed to protecting. I have a written account (this journal), to remind me of the evils I have triumphed over in the past.

Crystal Overlook

Crystal Overlook is a remote section of the Desolation. You need to go through The Ruptured Heart or the Alkali Pan just to reach it. I chose to travel through The Ruptured Heart. I really like traveling to these remote locations. I think it is a pity that few people are willing to travel too far from outposts. My good friend Rajas decided to come with me today and explore the Crystal Overlook.

Once inside the area, I noticed jagged rocks with light pulsating in them. There was the familiar green light I’ve seen in the Alkali Pan before, and also an orange-red light.

The Alkali Pan

In the race to track down Varesh and stop her for good, a lot of stuff has happened since my last entry. We taught our wurms a new trick, slaughtered margonites that helped Abaddon during his war with the other gods, and yes... killed Varesh! I have so much to write about, that it demands to be retold over a few journal entries rather than this one.

At least our victory against Varesh has bought us more time to deal with Abaddon. And with that time I am granted the opportunity to scour the Desolation for more information that can help our fight and better understand this wasteland. Elwin and my guild leader Theresa are joining me for the exploration of The Alkali Pan.

Joko's Domain

Exploring the Desolation is a weird experience. No matter how closely I bond with my junundu wurm, everything here just feels alien to me. This is the home of the undead, not the living. When I was in the Nightfallen Garden, Abbadon’s influence made me feel sick and I start doubting the thoughts in my mind. The sulfurous wastes give me the same sort of feeling. It’s comforting to have two friends at my side to help me through this. The elementalists Rajas and Elwin showed up at the Remains of Sahlahja to join my group and explore Joko’s Domain. We talked to Sahlahjar the Dead while we made preparations to leave. The ghost told us of how he made a deal with Palawa Joko in the hopes to save his people, and how this plot backfired on him. Now his people are part of Joko’s undead army with their only hope of escape from him is death in battle.

A bit earlier today, I killed groups of Margonites that were stationed at Joko’s Bone Palace. For now, Varesh is our common enemy and Palawa Joko is willing to do a lot to help me get rid of her. I’m sure that after we kill her and hopefully reverse the effects of Nightfall, we’ll have to stop him. During my latest conversation with the undead lord, I noticed that Koss and Tahlkora were chatting it up. Apparently Tahlkora told Koss that she was happy for him and Melonni and wished them the best. Thats enough time to reflect on the past for now. I motioned my friends that we were done and Rajas, Elwin and myself headed out.

Sulfurous Wastes

It is strange to travel the Desolation so freely. Until recently, I wouldn’t have even dreamed about crossing the sulfurous haze here. After we gained Queen Aijundu’s favor, we could control the wurms to go anywhere in the Desolation (provided that the area is sandy enough). This is exactly what we need to track down Varesh. Unfortunately we will have to deal with the consequences of releasing Palawa Joko later. I can only hope that after Nightfall, heroes will still have the strength to stop the undead lord if he tries to take over Elona again.

In the search for Varesh, and to combat the effects of Nightfall, Rajas is helping me explore the Sulfurous Wastes. Hopefully I can learn a bit more about ancient Elona and this wasteland in general.
